The Ida B. Wells Memorial Foundation has honored the work of three exceptional journalists with the Ida B. Wells Journalism Award. Their work exposed the truths about race in American society in the tradition of Wells' uncompromising advocacy for justice and equality.
November 2002 - the first award was given to Columbia University Law Professor and Nation magazine columnist Patricia J. Williams.
October 2004 - the second Wells Journalism Award was presented to journalist and New York Times columnist, Bob Herbert, for exemplifying courage in reporting on racial inequity and injustice in the United States today.
June 2008 - Paula Giddings was honored for her tenacity in conducting meticulous research in order to write a formidable book Ida: A Sword Among Lions that documents the incredible life and times of Ida B. Wells-Barnett.
