In 2009, the Ida B. Wells Memorial Foundation established the Ida B. Wells Scholarship which will be awarded to three students entering either their junior or senior year at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
The students must demonstrate scholarship as well as leadership abilities. The winners for 2009 were:
Briana M. Davis - a biology major / pre-pharmacy minor
She is a member of the honors club, code blue dance team, and Ebone fashion club. In addition to working two jobs, she tutors other students and is dedicated to helping others in the community. She would like to help decrease teenage pregnancy and homelessness
Rosa L. LeBlanc - an english liberal arts major
In addition to working on the cafeteria staff, she is a COPE center peer advisor, and writing center tutor. She stands out as leader, has great communication skills, and shows love for social justice. She is interested in helping to increase a love of learning for students in the schools who currently show lots of apathy.
Uche K. Okoye - a business administration major / computer info system minor
An immigrant from Nigeria, he is a dedicated student who is an extremely hard worker, dedicated to his fellow classmates and friends. He would like to decrease the incidents of child abuse and provide more family support services as well as awareness of the benefit of obtaining higher education.
